What I Wore: a new take…

It's been a hectic few weeks, with multiple jobs, as well as wacko weather, prohibiting me from getting quality photos of my more stylish outfits. So I decided to go analogue, and do some quick sketches to record my style. Professional illustrator I am not, but I think you'll get the point.

Wore this to work at my new/old office job. It is really challenging for me to look neat and professional when it's 90 degrees out…

Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook CEO and Fashion Icon

Your eyes do not deceive you. Yes, it is Thursday, and this is not a Girl Crush post. No, as far as I know, Mark Zuckerberg is not a girl. I think the Girl Crush series will be a bi-weekly series. It takes a lot of research time, and I am in fact trying to run an actual business (see here and here). I hope you will forgive me. And buy my shit.

I remember when Facebook first came out. I was in my final 2 years of college. At the time, I couldn't really grasp the appeal of sending instant updates about my every thought, plan, move, meal, etc. to my friends and classmates, and I didn't even get an account until a couple of years ago, after it had moved out of its frat-boy-school-spirit phase into the mainstream.

That said, Facebook is a defining artifact of this particular moment in US culture, so its not really surprising that Mark Zuckerberg, the founder and CEO, was Time magazine's Person of 2010. Revenge of the nerds, and all that.

Danbury Gents

From the Analogue Chic Street Style Spy Files…

If these first 2 shots look like surveillance photos… it’s because they kind of are.  I was looking for inspiration one day at my studio, and spotted these fellows from my windows on the 2nd floor.  Down with the mall!  Up with fabulous, traditional manly accessories!

Here’s the always stylish Patrick and friends, visiting my pop up shop.  You can’t miss Patrick downtown, and you can’t beat him at matching prints…

Danbury Street Style

Not always an oxymoron.

It’s been a while since I have had the opportunity to record for posterity the jewels of Danbury street style.  If you thought it was scanty during the warm months, believe me, style is clearly taking a back seat to warmth at this time of year.

Luckily, there are a few sparks in the dark that I find at or around the train station, particularly among the gentlemen – and I can only assume that they spend most of their time in NYC.

This morning I met Reggie as we were waiting for the in-bound train.  As usually happens, the days that I decide to leave my camera at home are the days when I end up wanting it.  Hence the camera photo, which is really insufficient to express how great Reggie looked– sorry, friend, I’m not doing you justice here.

Really nice gray wool coat, classy Ralph Lauren satchel, burgundy cords, and very nice brown leather shoes.  Best of all:

As you can see from this super photograph, Reggie is wearing a paisley scarf, which is so subtle, unexpected, and perfect.

Thanks for being a good sport, Reggie!

Geoffrey Emerson Webster

I knew Geoffrey was different when I saw him on the school bus with his Lisa Frank Trapper Keeper ®, spouting trivia about ancient Egyptian civilization… in elementary school.  And that was perhaps my only encounter with him until high school, by which time he was a loud and proud young gay man.  Although he was two years my junior, we soon connected in the Art Department over our mutual obsession with historical costume.  Again, his encyclopedic knowledge of anything that might remotely be connected to his topics of interest was his claim to fame: royal portraits, palace architecture, the royal families of Europe, styles of dress and coiffure…  We remained close for the remainder of high school and for a few years after I graduated.  Geoffrey even graciously organized and hosted my “debut” (in the 19th century literary sense) for my 18th birthday, complete with formal wear and punch.

By the time I looked him up on Facebook a few weeks ago, we had not had any contact in about 5 years.  Needless to say, it will take us a few sessions to thoroughly catch up…  I traveled to his house (!) in central Connecticut for tea and reminiscing and geeking out over fabric and antiques.
