Style Inspiration: Best Exotic Marigold Hotel
…for the Elderly and Beautiful. You know who you are.
This was my reward for the end of my first year at fashion design school. Once again, Hubby and I were by far the youngest people in the theater (that was also the case at Midnight in Paris, for some reason). What can I say—we have diverse taste! And we adore older British actors: Judi! Maggie!! Bill Nighy!!!
So, if Slumdog Millionaire did not convince you to inject some color and flowy cotton into your summer wardrobe, Best Exotic should do the trick.
The costuming was divine, and such a no-brainer for women of a certain age and/or shape. The colors, cuts and styling are perfect for summer, and can be translated for work, play and special events.
Judi Dench sports some very elegant, cool and comfortable ensembles throughout the film, mostly consisting of a long tunic-like shirt known as a kurta, paired with wide-leg pants, and topped with a scarf or shawl. She also carries a simple cloth bag as a clutch. And she doesn’t forget her hat when she’s going out in the sun.

Peep this trend: The Peplum
Please welcome my newest guest writer, Bethany! – Allie
Fashion: Sometimes new, sometimes old, often reinvented, it’s ever-changing. A current trend that is showing up on red carpets and runways is the peplum.
What’s that, you ask? A peplum is a flared ruffle that’s attached to the waistline of a dress, blouse or jacket. No, this resurgence is not a Victorian Era or Pretty in Pink takeover. Today’s peplum sports a modern tweak.

Street Style: Sweet, tart*.
*As in, sour/tangy, not the euphemism for a promiscuous woman…
Acid yellow-green with deep plummy purple.
This color combo was being rocked hard by South Asian girls this week.

Ch. 1
This building greeted me and Hubz as we pulled off the highway into Philadelphia last weekend. It’s located on Vine Street, just north of Chinatown.
I can’t tell if it’s actually very well-preserved wall paper from the adjacent building (now a parking lot) or a more recent addition of very creative street art. I have my spies working to find out more about it.
Not trashy: Fashion fun at Ideat Village’s Project Walkway
Oh my! This almost turned out to be the first week in a good long while where I didn't post at all! (Help a sister out, y'all.)
Wednesday night, I stayed out way past my bedtime to participate in Project Walkway, the upcycled fashion, family-friendly challenge at Ideat Village, the homegrown alternative to New Haven's International Festival of Arts and Ideas.
Holy hats, Batman! The Millinery Exhibit at the Danbury Museum
Mega millinery is now up for viewing at the Danbury Museum. Read my preview here, with an interview with the guest curator.
And here's what folks were wearing at the exhibit opening this past Saturday, June 4:

19th Century women's shoes from the collection of the Mattatuck Museum
The documentary biography of renowned street-style photographer Bill Cunningham is playing at Bethel Cinema again this week. HIGHLY recommended if you are interested in fashion, photography, NY life, or just stories of interesting people.
The Mattatuck Museum in Waterbury has an exhibit through September illustrating themes in interior decor and objects of daily life, including costumes and textiles.
The Danbury Museum will be opening a major exhibit of women's hats spanning 3 centuries, on Saturday, June 4. Look for my interview with the guest curator, this week at The Mercurial.
Street Style: Red 40
(Red 40 Lake was also a band in the '90s-'00s in central Connecticut, fronted by a former classmate of mine – anyone else heard of them or remember the glory days of Radio 104?)
This ice cream truck is so well-dressed, it has no idea.

Tute Review (sort of): Marie Antoinette-Inspired DIY Fashion
If you're going to be in my 'hood on June 4, please come to my Picnic in Celebration of Marie Antoinette's Half-Birthday.
Portrait of Marie Antoinette by Elisabeth Vigee Lebrun.
Costumes are required! We're going for tons of lace, ribons, bows, and pastel colors! Inspired by the fashionable queen herself, and Sofia Coppola's 2006 movie. (Take a look at these party photos for more inspiration, esp. for the gents.)
Here are a couple of DIY tutorials to help you get your costume properly ruffled and ribboned.
Retail Recon: Kohl’s
I did a reconnaissance mission to Kohl’s for you, to see what’s good and what should be left behind.
Honestly, I think this was the first time I’ve actually shopped at Kohl’s. I don’t regularly shop at department stores, only for targeted missions: finding an interview suit, picking up shirts for my husband, or, as in this instance, grabbing a new mattress pad on sale. I just don’t have the budget for regular priced retail, and I prefer the thrill of the hunt at secondhand shops.
But I know that some of you might be dedicated department shoppers, or sales-seekers, so I took a jog through the women’s section to see what’s up.
Great styling from Daisy Fuentes – belted floral dress with utility jacket.
I couldn't have put it together better myself.
