Random Review: Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky

At this point, I think I am willing to watch, listen, or look at anything to do with Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel.  And not because “I love Chanel”, but because I am just fascinated by her as a woman and an entrepreneur.

I have read one of the bios, and saw the Lifetime movie, and have been waiting for this movie, and Coco Avant Chanel to come out on Netflix streaming (I’m too impatient? lazy? to put it in my DVD queue and then move it to the top of the list).

Coco & Igor opened for wide release in September, 2010.  It’s based on a debut novel by poet Chris Greenhalgh.

Stravinsky, looking all manly. Photographer unknown. Read the rest of this entry »

Girl Crush: Women. All of them. Everywhere.

This entry is part 7 of 9 in the series Girl Crush

I'm taking a break from my usual Girl Crush feature this month. We need to talk.

I am a feminist.

If you don’t like that word, or people who describe themselves with that word, you’re free to click elsewhere on the intertubes. Bye!

Everyone else: thanks for sticking around.

So basically, I love women, I love being a woman, and I love what we can do as women.

I’m pretty much disappointed by Women’s History Month.

Girl Crush: Dorothy Parker

This entry is part 6 of 9 in the series Girl Crush

Indian Summer

In youth, it was a way I had

To do my best to please,

And change, with every passing lad,

To suit his theories.

But now I know the things I know,

And do the things I do;

And if you do not like me so,

To hell, my love, with you!

Jane Seymour: the winner is….

Wow. Seriously, guys?

No one?

How could you not want to own this?

Well, I had no takers on my giveaway of the fabulous tome, Jane Seymour's Guide to Romantic Living. I can only assume you thought the competition would be fierce and you thought your chances were slim. A reasonable, if timid, assumption.

Therefore, I will be putting this up for bid on Ebay. My seller ID is analoguechic if you want to include this fabulosity in your home library.

Girl Crush: Winona LaDuke

This entry is part 5 of 9 in the series Girl Crush

The one who knows / La que sabe.

This weekend I heard a radio program about Winona LaDuke and her work on sustainable, indigenous agriculture and energy in Minnesota. It didn't take very long for me to feel like we could totally be girlfriends.

LaDuke is probably best known by most people as Ralph Nader's Green Party running mate in 1996 and 2000.  In fact, she has a long resume of accomplishments, talents and projects.

To put it very briefly, she is a foremost worldwide activist, speaker, writer, and all-around shit-getting-done-er, particularly in the realms of women's rights, indigenous rights, and the environment, in no particular order.

Hellraiser.

Dangerous old woman.

Badass, beautiful.

Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook CEO and Fashion Icon

Your eyes do not deceive you. Yes, it is Thursday, and this is not a Girl Crush post. No, as far as I know, Mark Zuckerberg is not a girl. I think the Girl Crush series will be a bi-weekly series. It takes a lot of research time, and I am in fact trying to run an actual business (see here and here). I hope you will forgive me. And buy my shit.

I remember when Facebook first came out. I was in my final 2 years of college. At the time, I couldn't really grasp the appeal of sending instant updates about my every thought, plan, move, meal, etc. to my friends and classmates, and I didn't even get an account until a couple of years ago, after it had moved out of its frat-boy-school-spirit phase into the mainstream.

That said, Facebook is a defining artifact of this particular moment in US culture, so its not really surprising that Mark Zuckerberg, the founder and CEO, was Time magazine's Person of 2010. Revenge of the nerds, and all that.

Random Review: Jane Seymour’s Guide to Romantic Living

Random Review is kicking off today! It will be a monthly article reviewing something– books, blogs, movies, art– who knows, really? But it will be fashion related, some way, somehow.

This month I bring you a truly stunning piece of literature.

Jane Seymour's Guide to Romantic Living

I know Ms. Seymour best as Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman, a series I watched faithfully for several seasons. And I really haven't kept up with her since then.

I acquired this 3rd edition volume a year or two ago, I can't recall where, but it apparently cost me 50 cents. Obviously, I could not pass it up.

{In fact, it is just so good, I have to pass it on to a deserving blog reader. Read all the way to the bottom for instructions on how to win this book!}
